Anger Management

4 x Individual Sessions

Private One-to-One Anger Management

Our four Individual Anger Management Sessions are designed for individuals who prefer a more personal and flexible schedule and cannot commit to our highly-regarded all-day Saturday program or the program conducted over two Tuesday evenings. The program is identical but fine-tuned to individual needs.

Each session builds on the previous one and combines discussion, practical exercises, role-plays and real-life strategies that can be used at home, at work and in everyday situations.

Whether you are referring yourself or have been referred by Community Corrections, a solicitor, psychologist, employer or another agency, this program provides practical skills to help you better understand and manage anger.

Why Choose Individual Sessions?

Some people simply learn better in a private setting.

Individual sessions allow you to work directly with an experienced facilitator without the pressure of speaking in front of a group.

This program may be a better option if you:

  • Prefer one-to-one learning.
  • Want a confidential environment.
  • Travel regularly for work.
  • Work shifts or have changing work hours.
  • Live in a rural or remote area.
  • Find it difficult to attend scheduled group programs.
  • Learn better at your own pace.
  • Have been referred by a professional or government agency.

What Makes This Program Different?

This is not simply four individual sessions.

It is a structured educational program that helps participants understand anger, develop new skills and practice healthier ways of responding to difficult situations.

Throughout the program you will:

  • Learn why anger happens.
  • Understand your own anger patterns.
  • Recognise warning signs before anger gets out of control.
  • Learn practical strategies to calm yourself.
  • Improve communication skills.
  • Learn healthier ways to deal with conflict.
  • Develop skills that can improve relationships at home and at work.

Every participant receives the Tame Your Dragon Participant Manual to support learning throughout the program.

Program Structure

The program is delivered over four individual sessions and is divided into two learning modules.

Module One – Understanding Anger

(Sessions One and Two)

The first two sessions focus on understanding anger.

Many people try to control their anger without first understanding how it works. This module helps participants recognise their own anger patterns and understand why anger develops.

Topics include:

  • What is anger?
  • The purpose of anger.
  • The difference between anger, aggression and violence.
  • Understanding Clean Anger and Dirty Anger.
  • When does anger become a problem?
  • Common myths about anger.
  • Recognising the body’s early warning signs.
  • Identifying personal causes and triggers.
  • Understanding the link between thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
  • Recognising personal behaviour patterns.

By the end of this module, participants have a much clearer understanding of what contributes to their anger.

Module Two – Managing Anger

(Sessions Three and Four)

Once participants understand their anger, the focus shifts to learning practical skills.

Participants develop techniques that can be used in everyday situations before anger becomes destructive.

Topics include:

  • Emotional regulation.
  • Mindfulness skills.
  • Calming strategies.
  • Assertive communication.
  • Conflict resolution.
  • Building empathy.
  • Developing a personal Anger Management Plan.

The program finishes with a review of learning and practical strategies for maintaining long-term change.

Participant Requirements

This is an interactive educational program.

Participants are expected to take part in discussions, practical exercises and role-plays throughout the program.

To gain the greatest benefit, participants should be able to:

  • Speak and understand English.
  • Join in discussions.
  • Read short role-play scripts.
  • Complete practical exercises.
  • Think about their own behaviour.
  • Practise new skills between sessions.

Participants should attend each session free from the effects of alcohol or illicit drugs.

Participants Requiring an Interpreter

In some situations, a participant may attend with an approved interpreter after discussing this with the facilitator before the program begins.

Because the program relies on direct discussion, role-plays and practical learning activities, it is not always possible to independently assess whether the participant has achieved the learning outcomes of the program.

For this reason, participants attending with an interpreter may receive a Letter of Attendance rather than a Certificate of Completion.

This will always be discussed with the participant and, where appropriate, the referring agency before the program starts.

Referrals

People are welcome to refer themselves or may be referred by a professional.

Referrals are regularly received from:

  • Community Corrections
  • Solicitors
  • Courts
  • Employers
  • General Practitioners (GPs)
  • Psychologists
  • NDIS Support Coordinators
  • Drug and Alcohol Services
  • Community organisations
  • Government agencies
